After the weekly TV show ended, Dick continued to perform with the Welk orchestra at their theatre in Branson, Mo., and elsewhere around the nation. Dick was one of only three band members who was on every one of Welk’s hundreds of TV shows until they finally went off the air in 1982. Welk invited Dale to join his orchestra in Los Angeles for his new TV show.

Welk was a well-known bandleader in the Midwest in 1951 when he heard Dick singing with the Six Fat Dutchmen polka band on a radio show out of New Ulm, Minn. They lived in a house on the golf course until Dick’s passing in 2014 at the age of 88. When he and his wife Marguerite made their frequent visits to Algona, Pat’s sister babysat for their kids.ĭick Dale was an acclaimed musician from Algona.Īfter his Lawrence Welk career, Dick and his wife lived in Sparks, Nev., and he continued to perform until they returned to Algona in 2006. Her uncle married Dick’s sister, Vivian, and Dick sang at several Cowan family weddings. He really was the pride of Algona.Īnother Algonan turned Storm Laker who knew him is Pat Cowan. And every single Saturday Dad would point out, “There’s Dick Dale from Algona!” Mom and Dad both knew him.

I hadn’t seen Welk’s show in probably 30 years, but for some reason it was on in the background last Saturday when I heard Lawrence announce,“And now the pride of Algona, Ioway, Dick Dale.” Well, that perked my ears up.Īt the end of the show, Dick was interviewed for about 15 minutes about his life, when he reminisced about Algona.Īs a kid growing up in Algona, and even after we moved to Storm Lake in 1956, we had to watch Welk’s show every Saturday night on ABC.
